What you will see

A magnificent chapel located in Neochori and specifically on the road towards Plaka. It is on an ideal heightened location that gives amazing views of the Aegean Sea. Build in 1655 it used to be the church of the old monastery of The Assumption that belonged to the Vatopedi Monastery of Agion Oros (Mt.Athos). It is a single aisled domed basilica featuring unique post Byzantine frescoes of the 17th century of an unknown painter. Panagia I Plakiotissa (Virgin Mary of slabs, Plaka=slabs) is the Patron Saint of the area queries which Neochori is famous for and from where the famous Pelion slabs and stones are mined. Ideal period for visiting the chapel is on the 23 of August, when Virgin Mary is celebrated and a fair is organized.
