About the village

Kalamaki is a small mountainous village in east Pelion with a beautiful beach on the Aegean side, from which it took its name. The village’s houses are built on a hillside with lush vegetation and are divided by traditional cobbled streets and steep alleys.Previously, the settlement was called “Propan”, derived from the traditional stone of Pelion, as in the region operates a stone quarry.

Worth visiting in Kalamaki are the various religious sites in and around the village. The first of these is the magnificent church of St. Athanasius, which was built in 1874, and renovated on 1938 to its current form. It belongs to the category of basilica, has an excuisite interior decoration and celebrates twice a year, on January 18 and May 2. In the courtyard old graves have been discovered, suggesting that probably there was a cemetery there. Other smaller chapels, worth visiting, is Agios Ioannis (St. John), with the paved courtyard, the church of Agioi Apostoloi (Holy Apostles), located just outside the village, and also the monastery of Panagia Labidona, near Lampinou. This monastery, now ruined, is named so because of a flash which lightened once the beach of Labinou and helped a captain and his ship aground there and escape from a storm.

Once your tour is over, relax in the paved square, with the cool gurgling spring water, and enjoy the view towards the Aegean Sea or, if the weather allows it, go for a swim at the nearby beaches of Kalamaki and Labinou. The rocky beach of Kalamaki is located 2 km from the village and has rocks within its deep waters. On the other hand, the small beach of Labinou is 5km far from the village and has deep turquoise waters and a sandy beach.
