What you will see
On May 26 1893, the Greek government signed the construction of a railroad that would cross the coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf. It was a way for the Railways of Thessaly to increase their revenues. The great Italian mechanic Evaristo De Chirico, father of the famous painter Georgio De Chirico, designed the plans. The track would start from the city of Volos and initially would go to Ano Lechonia, however in 1900 it was decided to expand until Milies. Construction works finished on July 2 1903 and the train begun operating. Its total length was 28.200 meters while the track width was only 60 cm. Moutzouris, was the train’s name, after its distinctive engine smoke and had 26 wagons, 14 of which were for passenger use with few amenities and the remaining 12 for cargo.
The villages faced great changes and lived better days, as it was the only means of transportation and the train itself had a glorious period. People were tied with the train, as it became an integral part of their everyday life.
Still, as years passed and due to the development of the road network and buses, the train began to be considered unprofitable and avoided by the public. In the center of Volos, it began to create traffic congestions and so the dictatorial regime ceased its operation in 1971. In 1996, its operation was resumed for tourist purposes operating the scenic route from Ano Lechonia to Milies.
In 1985, it was declared as a historical monument and it is among the greatest attractions that one must visit in Pelion.
