What you will see

The womens monastery of Agios Lavrentios is located east of the homonymous Pelion village. At that area existed originally a Roman monastery built by Benedictine monks from Amalfi,Italy during the Fourth Crusade. Founder or renovator of the later monastery that was build on the ruins of the original was according to tradition, Osios Laurentios O Megas (St. Lawrence The Great) a monk from Megisti Lavra (Mt. Athos). The monastery was built in 1378 and is responsible for the naming and the foundation of Agios Lavrentios village.

It played a crucial role in the village development during the Ottoman occupation and its church served as a “Kryfo Scholio” (Secret School). It is worth visiting for admiring its exquisite architecture, while in a special area nearby are the facilities of the childrens camp of Metropolis Dimitriados.
