What you will see

The imposing church of Kimiseos Tis Theotokou (The Assumption) is a proof of the great religious tradition of Makrinitsa, having a great history within times full, of legends and traditions.

Initially, in the place of the present church of Virgin Mary, was another monastery, which was founded by Constantine Maliasinos and around it, the village was developed. The church lasted until the 17th century when it fell into obscurity and its place took in 1767, the church of Virgin Mary of Makrinitsa. The earthquakes of 1955 demolished the church and in 1963, it was rebuilt from the ground up, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as was the temple of 1767.

The present church belongs to the category of basilica without a dome. In the interior stands out the wooden iconostasis and the terrain of the Virgin Mary, painted in the 13th century and depicting the Virgin upright and praying. Externally, you will be impressed by the great square, paved with slabs, the tall trees and the belfry.

The church is surrounded by its chapels, the Agious Anargyrous (Holy Merchandise), St Magdalene, St Nicholas, etc. Both in the main church and in the chapels there are many valuable relics such as icons, books and sacred vessels (Holy Chalices, Holy Gospels, cherubim, old liturgical vestments, etc.).
