About the village
Platanias is a charming seaside village built in the southeastern coast of the Magnesia peninsula. It is one of the most visited summer resorts of Pelion as it attracts thousands of vacationers every year, the reasons are many: Its close distance to other settlements such as Promyri and Katigiorgis, the beautiful sandy beach, the modern amenities offered to visitor and the famous taverns offering fresh fish and local seafood delicacies.
Platanias harbor is the largest fishing port of Magnesia, gathering many boats and trawlers and from there, frequent trips to the islands of Sporades which are located across, are organized.
Find some time, and walk around the village and admire the houses build along the beach and in small hills. Enjoy a swim in the beach and taste seafood at one of the nearby taverns. After your walk, you can discover the nearby picturesque villages, or the nearby beaches through the touring boats that are based there.
If you walk towards the west, after the beach of Platanias, you will reach Kastri, a seaside settlement in a crescent shape that combines the mountains greenery with the light blue crystal waters of the sea and the white of its sandy beach. It is located in the east side of Pelion in between the villages of Platanias and Katigiorgis, while its sea is ideal for the lovers of windsurfing.
In a small beach, east of Platanias is the cave of Thetis and Peleus, where according to mythology, consummation took place and Achilles was born. The cave is accessible only through sea and along with the surrounding caves create a mysterious atmosphere.
Various cultural events take place during summer such as the fair of Agioi Anargiroi on the 1st of July and the fishing night on August, organized by the cultural association “Friends of Platanias”. Aside from these events, parties are frequently organized in the beach.
