About the village

Promyri is a mountain village in southern Pelion, build on a slope with lush vegetation. It is a village that has preserved the traditional Pelion characteristics something that you’ll discover upon walking and seeing the old mansions and the stone houses.

Although not being a famous village, visitors will find many things to do. Among the main attractions is the impressive convent of Agios Spyridon, reminiscent of a castle build on a forested area. It is one of the most important religious and historical sites of the area with significant contribution to the national liberation struggle against the Ottoman Empire. Also visit the nearby grounds with the temple of Panagia Mousgiotissa that stands out for its stunning murals.

Within the village, two monuments capture the attention: The fountain Trani Vrisi (great fountain) and the church of Panagia (Virgin Mary). Trani Vrisi was build in 1796 by craftsmen from Zoupani, Kozani, it is one of the oldest fountains in Pelion and has been declared as a monument that stands out for its size and shape. The church of Panagia is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and is situated at the village's end from where you have magnificent views towards Promyri and the sea. It is a fine representative sample of Pelion architecture that stands out for the remarkable stone reliefs and the impressive paintings. The church is celebrated every year with a fair held on the 15th of August the day of the Assumption.

After visiting the sights, take some time to discover the nearby beaches. A pleasant trip is to the beach of Theotokos (Virgin Mary) where the chapel of 1807 gave its name. There, laid the ancient city Sipiada that reminds us of the love of Peleus and Thetis and the partial destruction of the Persian fleet in 480. Since you’ll be at this area, the archeological site with the columns and the mosaics is worth visiting.

Equally attractive is the sea village Liri, founded by Promyri villagers after a massacre was carried out in their village. And, of course, don’t miss the charming beach of Platanias, which is the port village of Promyri.
